MP3 Players

The good: Excellent sound quality; compatible with OGG and FLAC formats; high bit-rate voice recording; text-file reader; sleek form factor.

The bad: No compatibility with online music stores or subscription services--yet; grayscale screen; doesn't play digital-image or movie files; no FM radio; must purchase adapter to add line-in recording jack; so-so control layout; can't autosync music with a PC; can't browse by artist, album, or genre; headphone jack quickly develops a short.

The bottom line: Cowon's iAudio M5 is essentially a stripped-down and slightly less-expensive version of the iAudio X5, but it lacks a color screen and doesn't play videos or show photos.

The good: Beautiful, photo-friendly color screen; excellent interface; supports DRM-protected WMAs and subscription-download services; line-in and voice recording; plays Audible content; inexpensive when purchased online.

The bad: No FM radio; no cradle option; slow to boot; mediocre sound quality, especially from certain equalizer settings; below-average battery life; annoying proprietary cable/charger; limited slide-show capabilities; doesn't display album art.

The bottom line: Despite the addition of a color screen, Samsung's latest iPod killer is actually a step back from its grayscale predecessor.

The good: Sophisticated, compact design; solid sound quality and nice EQ options; excellent FM and voice recording; photo-friendly color screen; supports Windows Media DRM 10.

The bad: Controls aren't as intuitive as those on the iPod; power adapter requires a USB dongle; line-in recording requires an optional cradle that's not available yet; no album art support; can't act as a USB host for PC-less transfer of photos; battery is not swappable, as with the 5GB and 6GB H10.

The bottom line: The H10 includes nearly every coveted feature, but navigating the player controls can be frustrating.

The good: Small size; video player with 260,000-color LCD; customizable wallpaper; FM radio; line-in and voice recording; photo viewer; text-file reader; excellent sound quality; reads photos directly from digital cameras; compatible with OGG and FLAC formats, as well as subscription WMA tracks.

The bad: Must plug in an adapter to attach AC, line-in, and USB cables (however, the built-in side USB port handles camer transfers and MTP subscription downloads); so-so control layout; can't autosync music with a PC; can't browse by artist, album, or genre; many video files need to be converted to play on X5; no slide-show mode or music while viewing photos; no autoscanning presets for FM radio.

The bottom line: The great-sounding Cowon iAudio X5 looks like an iPod killer on paper, but this palm-size music and video player suffers from mediocre music browsing and some key design missteps.

The good: Sleek, compact design; sharp LCD resolution; slick video interface and controls; support for DRM-protected media; music and video syncing with Windows Media Player; photo viewer and direct image transfers from digital cameras; voice and in-line recording; Mophun game-engine support.

The bad: Player is heavy for its size; no video recording; no built-in speaker; so-so viewing angles; highest volume setting could be louder; no sound equalizer; no background music for photo slide shows; subpar battery life, especially for audio.

The bottom line: Archos's supercompact Gmini 402 portable video player adds DRM-protected media to its long list of features.
